This original contemporary dance production was conceived, directed and developed by Ryan Cunningham under Alberta Aboriginal Arts with choreography by Troy Emery Wigg. The piece explores the evolution and decimation of the wild buffalo in the North American plain as an analogy to the concomitant cultural genocide of Aboriginal peoples of the land.

Told through the eyes of the Buffalo, They Shoot Buffalo, Don't They? is a contemporary dance piece with mask. Reminiscent of traditional ceremonies performed by Indigenous cultures, the masks, choreography and performance give life to the evolution of the wild Buffalo in North America. From living on the prairies as the largest land animal in North America, to the arrival of the European settlers, to the genocide that followed shortly thereafter. Through physical story telling, we witness the duality of fate between the Buffalo slaughter and the cultural genocide experienced by all the Indigenous cultures across the Americas.

They Shoot Buffalo, Don't They? is part one of a trilogy of dance pieces, each choreographed by an international Aboriginal choreographer. The common theme explored in this trilogy is the experience of colonization from the perspective of Indigenous people from around the world.
