Co-presented with the Centre for Art Tapes and in partnership with
Saint Mary's University Art Gallery

  September 20 | 8pm | FREE
Saint Mary's University Art Gallery

September 18-23 | Bonus! Ongoing video display—Neptune Studio Theatre Lobby

This event features a video screening of home-style, 10 short films by Paul Wong, curated by J.J. Kegan McFadden, director/curator of PLATFORM. Toured by PLATFORM Centre for Photographic + Digital Arts

In home-style we are treated to an unapologetic Wong whose camera shoots everything from punk house fires in Vancouver's downtown East Side to drug-fueled Manhattan hotel room parties. Wavering poetically between the political and the sensational, Wong seeks to revaluate notions of taste and distinction, forcing his audience to consider: the musicality of a car horn; the unabashed optimism in addiction; the implications of real estate speculation on a neighbourhood whose denizens have long been marginalized or forgotten.

This selection of the gritty, yet vulnerable, recent work in video by one of Canada's pioneers in the field was originally screened by PLATFORM Centre for Photogtaphic + Digital arts in Winnipeg during the Reel Pride Film Festival 2010.

Paul Wong is a pioneer in making art with video starting in the mid-1970s. Since then, he has had numerous exhibitions in experimental and artist run spaces and in public galleries across the country.

An artist talk and discussion will follow the presentation, with Paul Wong, Robin Metcalfe, director/curator of Saint Mary's University Art Gallery & curator J.J. Kegan McFadden director/curator of PLATFORM.

Bonus! Paul Wong Public Art projects 2000-2012 will be screened for the public from the window of the Neptune Studio Theatre Lobby on Argyle Street September 18 to 23. This screening features a selection of projects including broadcast television, 2003 Venice Bienale commission, 2010 Winter Olympics commission, site-specific projects for galleries, outdoor urban screens, boats, buses, festivals and the internet.
